Senior Congress leader and former Maharashtra chief minister Prithviraj Chavan expressed surprise at the party’s defeat in the state assembly elections, calling it the “worst” defeat in the state’s history.
Speaking to PTI on Sunday, Chavan attributed the ruling Mahayuti alliance’s success to the Mahila Behan Yojana, a scheme providing financial aid to women, which had a strong impact on rural voters. Meanwhile, he said polarisation had a negative impact on the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) in urban constituencies.

“It is difficult to say whether there was a wave in favour of the ruling alliance or there was some manipulation,” said Chavan, who himself lost from the Karad South seat in Satara. Chavan had expected to win the seat by a margin of 5,000 to 6,000 votes, but the results showed the MVA candidate losing by over 40,000 votes in the district.
According to the Election Commission results, BJP’s Atul Bhosale defeated Chavan in Karad South by a huge margin of 39,355 votes. The Congress, which contested 101 seats as part of the MVA, suffered its worst defeat in the Assembly, winning only 16 seats.Reflecting on the defeat, Chavan recalled the Congress’ lowest tally in the 1977 Lok Sabha elections, when the party won only 20 of the 48 seats in Maharashtra.
“This is a shocking defeat and the worst ever in assembly elections,” he said.Chavan mentioned that he has already spoken to All India Congress Committee in-charge for Maharashtra Ramesh Chennithala, who has left for Delhi to brief the Congress leadership about the election results. “I will stay in Karad for two days to meet people,” he said.
According to the final figures released by the Election Commission after the completion of counting of votes for the Maharashtra Assembly elections, the BJP-led Mahayuti alliance retained power in Maharashtra by winning 233 of the 288 assembly seats to form the government while the opposition MVA won only 50 seats.
This is an unprecedented electoral victory that Maharashtra has not seen since the 1980s. The BJP emerged as the single largest party by winning 132 seats on its own.The MVA has described the Mahayuti’s electoral victory as “unexpected and unimaginable”. Shiv Sena (Uttar Pradesh) leader Uddhav Thackeray questioned the basis of public support for the Mahayuti, citing unresolved issues such as the plight of soybean farmers, shifting of industries to Gujarat, concerns over women’s safety, rising inflation and crop loan waivers.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the victory secured by the BJP and its allies in Maharashtra and substantial victories in the bypolls in several States as one for “unity” and the spirit behind the slogan ‘ek hain toh safe hain’ (united we remain safe).
Mahayuti leaders credited their success to the Majhi Ladki Bahin Yojana, outreach efforts towards smaller communities, internal coordination, higher women voters’ percentage, and the RSS factor.
